Dear Moderator,

My name is Leah West. Welcome to my A Level Media Studies blog. This is a record of the work I have undertaken for the Making Media Non-examination Assessment (NEA) within the OCR H409 GCE A Level course in Media Studies.

I worked independently on Brief 3: Magazine and Online to produce the front covers and contents pages for the first two editions of a film magazine called THE DRIVE-IN together with the magazine's accompanying website.

Research and Planning

Further down in my blog you will find evidence of my research and planning for this task.

NEA Task 21 (Planning) : Photography Planning

 1. Who will you be using as your models for each photograph (bear in mind that your photographs need to show representation of two distinct social groups)

My first edition of 'THE DRIVE-IN' will include a main image of actor George MacKay (my brother Louis West as the model) for the film 'James' (not a real film only a concept for the coursework).

My second edition of 'THE DRIVE-IN' will include a main image of me (Leah West) for the film 'Trapped' (not a real film only a concept for the coursework).

My second edition of 'THE DRIVE-IN' will include a main image of actor Florence Pugh (Isabelle) for the sequel of Midsommar (MIDSOMMAR 2).

2. What thought needs to be given to the following elements of mise-en-scene?

Location

'James' will be set outside, hopefully in a body of water which connotes to the serial killer plot of the film. If this is too hard to achieve it will be on grass in a field.

'Trapped' will have a plain background as it is just a close up of the model, suggesting that it is interior.

'Midsommar 2' will have a blue background, indicating the sky.

Costume

My brother will wear a white vest top that is wet on the sides and still slightly dry hopefully. It will also be splattered with fake blood. His hair will be damp from the water and there may also be some fake blood on his face.

I will have smeared makeup and a dress on.

A flower crown, limited makeup and possibly flowers on her chest on a white dress or just a white dress.

Props

Other than the blood there will be no props

Flower crown

Body language of model

My brother will have direct gaze and a serious expression to connote fear, however I would also like to see how it would look if he smiles creepily into the camera but I don't want it to look unprofessional. It may have to be more of a smirk. Also, he will be floating in the water but below the chest wont be visible.

I will be looking away from the audience and into the distance, as if somethings distracting me. There will also be hands wrapped around my head as if my mind is 'trapped' as well as my physical self.

Direct gaze with camera with a sad expression or looking into the distance.

Lighting

The lighting for 'James' will be darkish with cool tones to reflect the theme/genre of the film. This also suggests it was taken in the evening instead of broad daylight.

After research I found that the colours blue and purple reflect themes of isolation, fear and the feeling of being trapped, so I will use editing to make the photos these colours. Therefore the lighting will need to be bright when focussed on my face and hands and darker for the backgrounds.

The lighting will be warm, reflecting the viewpoints that the characters want to represent in the film even though its a dark film.

3. Who will be taking your photographs and what equipment will they use?

I will be taking all the photos using my iPhone camera as my brother and friend will need someone to photograph him,

Proof that my brother is suitable for being in front of a camera after I photographed him the other day to possibly use for the website.

The review (unfinished) that would be published by a film enthusiast on the linked page

Give the people more of this! Thrillers like these never get old, a normal guy who is actually a murderer going after his ex -girlfriend, it's a classic! Now I understand why there was so much press surrounding 'James', George MacKay (James) gave a brilliant performance as he switched roles, businessman by day, murderer by night and not to mention Emma Watson (Erin) with her heartfelt and jaw dropping performance as she left James after an eight-year relationship. Of course, the film didn't end here, no this was only the beginning.

For those who are yet to watch 'James', it takes place in modern day London, and we find out in the trailer and very early into the film that James and Erin have been together eight years and that they had been engaged for a couple of months. However, due to James' temper, enhanced by the stress of his job, Erin makes the decision to leave him unaware of the consequences. Implied from movie posters and the trailer, James is led down a murderous path, seeking revenge and luring women who look alike to Erin into the woods.

I don't want to spoil too much, the film hasn't been out for a considerable amount of time, but a scene that really stood out to me was when James was looking for his next victim on the train, who later ended up being twenty-two-year-old Nancy (played by Daisy Edgar Jones) and the song 'Psycho Killer' by the Talking Heads was playing, as if James was implying who he was and what his intentions were. The lyrics I most relate to him are, 'I can't seem to face up to the facts', 'You're talking a lot, but you're not saying anything' and 'I hate people when they're not polite', these suggest that James is arrogant and that he has strong opinions. Additionally, I found that whilst analyzing the character qualities of James, his way of thinking has strong intertexuality to the character of Patrick Bateman (played by Christian Bale in American Psycho), a wealthy, sadistic and jealous businessman who strives to appear better than anyone else in his trade. I believe that is why the film is so widely appreciated by so many film critics and movie enthusiasts, each character seems familiar yet so unique in their own way and it does have one amazing soundtrack.

Of course there are some honorable mentions of other astounding actors who worked on this film, such as Gary Oldman (Ralph), who played James' associate and is the first one in his circle to link the disappearances of the women to James and therefore begins to work with detective Charles (played by Idris Elba).

NEA Task 19 (Planning) : Contents Pages

 Planning

Researching from my own magazines
- Modern Day Icons
- Empire (2)
- Rolling Stone
- Classic ROCK

Mock up

This page would be for mock up 1, (James) as the red matches the colour theme for the front cover and film (links to blood and the serial killer storyline).

The features include real new films that are coming out such as the Hunger Games and The Marvels. Also, thinking points are included for media literate audiences who prefer to discuss how films affect behaviour or which is best. Lastly the film on the front cover is given a page number for those who are interested in an in-depth discussion on a gripping storyline.

Additionally, an extra image of an actor from the main film may be included near that coverline.

This page would be for mock up 2 (Trapped) as the blue matches the colour theme for the front cover and film (isolation, feeling trapped and scared).

Instead the image will be a yellow triangle building (from Midsommar).

The features include a real new film such as Deadpool 3. Also, talking point such as musician Harry Styles becoming an actor and more Harry Potter movies coming out invites discussions from media literate audiences who are aware of these people/franchises. Lastly, popular and now well-known director Greta Gerwig is mentioned as she 'directs' new film 'Trapped'.

Additionally, an extra image of an actor from the main film may be included near that coverline.

Lastly, I may make the image thinner so I can have more room for more features, and slightly shorter for any other smaller features I can include.

(both options)

NEA Task 18 (Planning) : Mock Up of Cover 1 and 2

Planning

First I planned my front covers with a mind map, I wanted to think of two film concepts for the front cover of my magazines and have at least one to have a more meaningful storyline where a young adult audience can relate (Trapped). The other concept would focus on conventional genres such as horror / psychological thriller with a gripping storyline (James).

Mock up

After this I started with mock up 2 which would end up as the first edition of THE DRIVE-IN.

Once I had drawn it out I recreated it on PowerPoint to get more of an idea of how it would look, improving it with colour and more cover lines that would introduce the target audiences interests.

Image is sourced from google images, however my brother will model as George Mackay and play the lead role of JAMES for the front cover.

The red drawing symbolises blood that my brother will model on his face.

'JAMES WOULD KILL ANYONE TO TALK TO US' indicates that within the magazine there is an interview with George Mackay that only media literate audiences could decode.

'EXCLUSIVE FIRST EDITION' makes this particular edition of the magazine appear more special than the rest as it is the first ever made.

The price is £4.99 on the first edition to increase the chances of audiences purchasing but increases to £5.99 after.
'DRIVE-IN' will also have 'THE' in the 'D'.

Website link will be at the bottom by the barcode.

Then I designed mock up 1 from the mind map, being the second edition of THE DRIVE-IN.

Once I had drawn it out I recreated it on PowerPoint to get more of an idea of how it would look, improving it with colour and more cover lines that would introduce the target audiences interests.

Image is sourced from google images, however I will model for the lead role for 'Trapped' on the front cover.

'A CHANCE TO WIN' excites audiences, an easy way to achieve free stuff.

Price has increased by a pound.

Colours of the text correspond to the theme of the film.
Purple/blue best represents the feelings of being scared, trapped and isolated.

Greta Gerwig is mentioned, indicating that she is the director of the film, she is also best known for her films about being a woman in todays society such as 2019 Little Women and 2023 Barbie.
'DRIVE-IN' will also have 'THE' in the 'D'.

Website link will be at the bottom by the barcode.

(NEW IDEA)
Instead of TRAPPED I will create the sequel to Midsommar. The layout will be the same but the title and image will be changed and my friend Isabelle will play Dani.
