NEA Task 6 : Understanding Audience (Mass Market)

What is a mass market audience?

A mass market audience is a large group of people who a campaign focusses on as their target audience. For example the group would share interests/hobbies.

What is an independent cinema?

Described as the 'lifeblood of the film industry', independent cinemas show mostly independent movies with lesser known actors, directors and writers included in the production. Therefore, they give opportunities and a platform to unknown people in the film industry.

What is OnScreen magazine?

OnScreen magazine was launched in July 2013 and shows both upcoming known films and independent films. Their magazines are free of charge and can be found digitally or on printed copies in independent cinemas.

What different sections are there on the OnScreen website and how do these sections appeal to a mass market audience?

On the homepage of the OnScreen website there are hyperlinks to features, news, reviews, trailers, movies, winning opportunities and cinema passes. This appeals to a mass market audience as there is variety as a large audience as a whole may not all be interested in just films. Therefore the use of including other sections such as reviews for those passionate about that area in the film industry increases the likelihood that they will have a larger audience.

How does the latest edition of OnScreen magazine (May/June 2023) appeal to a mass market audience?

The main image includes famous actor Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, a well known character in the Indiana Jones movie franchise. This targets possibly an older audience who may have grown up with the franchise and are looking forward to another adventure film. The top strapline reads, 'Your ultimate guide to cinema, what's on, features, coming soon', this appeals to an audience who desire the upcoming updates before anyone else and those who want extra information about latest films. The bottom strapline includes other new films that are coming out or have just come out, this shows what is included within the magazine and appeals to those who are interested in other genres such as action or horror. There are 2 puffs on this front cover, the first reads 'FREE'. The use of capitalization is used to emphasize the cheapness of the magazine and encourage people to take one. The second puff follows the colour scheme from the main image but is still easily recognizable by the colour of the typography It includes a chance to win something from a different type of film (an animated action film) which could appeal to those who are less interested in adventure genres.

What is meant by the term cross-media convergence?

Cross-media convergence is operating across different forms of media and it creates a greater audience engagement by making more content on web platforms.

Is there any cross-media convergence* between the magazine and its website?

There is cross-media convergence between the OnScreen magazine and its website. For example, on their website you can click on any recent cover and it will take you to a page where you can read all the content within the magazine. This may create a greater audience engagement as it is digital and easily accessible, this is especially from those who are time poor and cannot go out to find the latest edition.
